Double binds in dialogue: Unraveling paradoxical communication in business families and family businesses
Abstract
Business families are confronted with different complex social systems that require them to oscillate between different systems logics and expectations. Consequently, family members tend to use double bind communication, which may result in paradoxical communication and increasing tensions. This qualitative study aims to achieve a deeper understanding of expectation structures and the emergence of paradoxes in business families due to different systems logics. Drawing from a Luhmannian systems-theoretical perspective, we will explore 1) how the business family handles the confrontation of the different systems logics of family and business within its communication, 2) how in-depth interviews can be analyzed that help to better understand how paradoxical communication occurs, and 3) how communication patterns, expectation structures, and sense-making can be explored by systems logics. Through this exploration, we aim to reveal insights into complex interrelationships and paradoxes in business families.
